This one day programme is an introduction to pension issues and terminology. This event has been designed for those that are interested in becoming more involved in the governance of their pension plans, or who have new responsibilities related to pensions and who have not yet received training in key areas including investment, governance, fiduciary duties and plan communication. It is also a great opportunity for those that would like to brush up on their pension training. Participation in the boot camp is recommended for forum participants who would benefit from basic level pension training. Registration includes morning and afternoon coffee breaks.

This one day pension programme has been designed to cover key pension information including:

The Elements of the Canadian Retirement System: This session will provide an overview of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Occupational Pension Plans and other savings, including Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) as well as what Canadians can expect when they retire from these elements.

Pension Plan Basics: In this part of the programme, we will review key pension terminology, including the different types of pension plans that exist in Canada such as defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans and multi-employer plans and the roles and responsibilities of beneficiaries, unions, plan sponsors and service providers. We will so discuss the relationship between funding (how money comes into the plan), investments (how the plan generates income) and benefits (how funds are paid out to plan beneficiaries).

The Role of Unions in Plan Governance and Member Engagement: In this final session, we will review the role of unions in plan governance, including the fiduciary duties of pension plan trustees and advisory committee members as well as the important role of unions in promoting member education about pension issues.
