Toxic Chemicals

Toxic chemicals can present significant regulatory, reputational, and litigation risks for companies in the energy and consumer products sectors.

Our focus in the energy sector is on “hydraulic fracturing,” a process used to extract gas from unconventional sources (such as shale rock) that often involves the use of toxic chemicals. We are urging Canadian companies to employ best available practices to reduce the potential negative impact of hydraulic fracturing operations on the natural environment and human health.

In the consumer products industry, we are asking companies to improve disclosure of potentially toxic chemicals in consumer products.  We are encouraging companies to take steps to reduce or eliminate a number of toxic chemicals present in their products / packaging, and to implement robust chemical management procedures and substitution policies to minimize risks for consumers and investors.
